Greg Thom, "Vice President, Government Affairs, General Counsel, & Secretary"

. . .or, as Greg Thom has apparently told at least one Federal law enforcement agency, he is "the head of the University's legal department and is mainly responsible for all government and regulatory law [sic] for the University. This [sic] includes civil rights laws and the more common financial aid laws."

Regardless of whatever planetary alignment dictates that Greg Thom's current title is supposed to be, the fact is that he is currently under investigation by Federal law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, it would certainly appear as if Greg Thom also holds the title of "Chief Liar" for Capella University and plays a key role in retaliating against students learners who speak out about incompetence at the school.

Before some of Greg's lies are documented here, it should noted the illustrious Mr. Thom first climbed to fame when he followed the lead of the pornography industry by kowtowing to the whims of the Acacia Research Corporation. Acacia started demanding payment for a controversial patent license that nearly all other universities have refused to pay for. Capella didn't mind - after all, it might be used as yet another excuse to raise tuition! Interestingly, the Chronicle of Higher Education noted that:

"Most colleges want to avoid signing such license agreements. General-counsel offices at various colleges -- including the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Virginia -- have discussed mounting a collective defense.

Some see Capella's licensing agreement as setting a bad precedent for higher education. Sally M. Johnstone, director of the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications, said that Capella had "basically validated Acacia's claim."

"It sounds to me that just as the porn industry was not willing to fight, the higher-education industry is unwilling to fight," she said. She worried that administrators at traditional institutions would now feel more pressure to strike a deal with Acacia.

Officials at Capella and at Acacia did not respond to calls from The Chronicle on Wednesday.”

The last sentence is particularly enlightening because Greg Thom, when is engaged in retaliating against students, literally refuses to abide by written university policy that states e-mail is the official form of communication. In addition, Greg Thom insists on ONLY speaking by telephone. (Hey Greggy, it’s easier to try and cover your tracks that way, right?!)

Interestingly, in another article Greg did open his mouth and stated,

""We don't use much of their technologies, but signing the agreement for an insignificant cost saves us money from hiring outside attorneys," said Greg Thom, Capella's general counsel. "We haven't even looked in great deal to the scope of the patents. It was in our best financial interest to sign the agreement and move on."

Apparently, Greg Thom has no problem wasting money on such matters and yet he really seems to enjoy abusing students (as will be documented on this site).

Now that we've got that settled, the fact is that Greg Thom is a liar. Here are some of his lies:

• Greg Thom Lies to Law Enforcement Agency - Greg Thom tells one Federal Law enforcement agency one thing, then, just a few days later, he demonstrates he had no intention of doing what he told them!
• Greg Thom refuses to follow Capella's written policies. So, what else is new?
